With the beginning of another year upon us once again, now is a great time to take stock and set some targets for the year ahead. If you are leading a team in business then it is the perfect opportunity to set some proactive goals for becoming even more effective in 2018, no matter what your level of experience. If you need some help getting started, read on for some of our top tips to help you succeed in the new year.

  • Look back at the year and learn

Reflect on the year just gone and try to take some lessons from experiences you have had along the way. Being analytical of your own achievements and the challenges you have experienced in your leadership role will allow you to focus on the things you need to do better in the coming year.  If you set some goals at the beginning of 2017 then even better! Look back over these again and identify where you succeeded as well as what areas could use some development, then use this to inform your focus for the year ahead.

  • Take some training

You may have learnt how to lead a team on the job, or perhaps you took some formal training to start with, but there is always room to improve and taking some form of professional development training is a great way to enhance your leadership skills. An expert will be able to guide you on aspects of leadership you may not have previously considered, and you can include training courses on your resume to boost future job prospects too. Consult with management and see what funding is available for this sort of training – if demand is high you could even think about bringing someone in to train a number of other staff, which may prove more economical too.

  • Meet with staff

One of the best ways you can learn about how to improve as a leader is through feedback from your staff, so make time to meet with them and discuss any improvements that could be made for the coming year. Whilst this can be awkward for staff members who might not want to appear critical of their team leader, keep it informal and frame it as a catch up discussion and ask for feedback organically as part of a wider discussion.  You could even set up a system whereby staff could submit anonymous feedback if that works better for your team.

  • Set some goals

As well as having ideas about how you can improve your leadership in the upcoming year, you should set some more formal goals in order to help you work towards something tangible. Write them down, and share them with others – that way you’ll stay motivated to achieve them in the months ahead.
